The authorized strength of the Carpentersville Police Department is the Chief of Police, Deputy Chief, four Commanders, eight Sergeants, forty-nine Patrol Officers, and four Community Service Officers. FIELD OPERATIONS
The Patrol Section
The Patrol Section is the heart and soul of the police department. The uniformed officers are the first responders to all calls for service, reports of criminal activity, and other emergency incidents within the Village of Carpentersville. The uniformed patrol officer's duties include the prevention and detection of criminal activity, enforcement of traffic laws, the investigation of traffic collisions and non-criminal calls for service.
The Patrol Section also includes other specialized services such as the DARE education officer, Dundee-Crown High School liaison officer, Carpentersville Middle School liaison officer, major traffic accident reconstruction officers, and evidence technicians.

Traffic Accident Investigation — The police department is responsible for the safe usage of the public roadway system. Upon occasion, however, traffic collisions can result in major property damage and severe injuries or fatalities. The department maintains very specialized investigators that are trained in traffic accident reconstruction to investigate these incidents. These vital investigations determine the root cause of a collision and in many cases allow victims the ability to recover for their losses.

Canine — A sergeant and one canine currently staff the Carpentersville Police Department Canine unit. Canine Dudley is an 8-year-old male Golden Retriever. He has been trained and certified in narcotics detection and non-aggressive tracking.

Northern
Illinois Police Alarm System (NIPAS) — The Carpentersville Police Department joined the Northern Illinois Police Alarm System (NIPAS) in the fall of 2001. NIPAS is an organization made up of over 100 police agencies throughout the North East Illinois area through a cooperative intergovernmental agreement to provide mutual aid for its member agencies. This mutual aid pact gives the police department an immediate response of up to fifty police officers from all over the northeast metropolitan area in an emergency. Besides the mutual aid pact, the Carpentersville Police Department participates in the Emergency Response Team and the Mobile Field Force specialized units.
The ERT is a SWAT team of comprised of over 80 highly trained officers. The ERT brings state of the art communications, a command post and armored personnel vehicle to Carpentersville in case of emergency. The police department has a sergeant assigned to ERT.
The Mobile Field Force is a group of over 100 officers trained in the suppression of civil disturbance and special event security. The department has two officers assigned to the MMF.
- Community Service Officers — Two full-time and two part-time community service officers assist the patrol division in a myriad of services. Some of their duties include: animal control, Village ordinance violations, traffic direction at traffic collisions, and prisoner processing. These versatile non-sworn officers are called upon to assist police officers in many situations.

The Investigations Section
Consists of a myriad of support and follow-up services for the police department. The Criminal Investigations Bureau is supervised by a Commander and staffed with a Sergeant and five detectives. It is responsible for all follow-up investigations of adult and juvenile crimes. The unit also has a sixth detective assigned to the North Central Narcotics Task Force.
The Community Response Team is also under the command of the Investigations Section Commander. The CRT unit is supervised by a Sergeant and is staffed with four patrol officers, department Social worker, and two Title V Grant employees. The CRT Unit is responsible for the investigation and problem solving of quality of life issues, interdiction of gang-related activity and gang crime enforcement.
- Investigations — The Investigations Unit is responsible for all follow-up investigations of criminal incidents within the Village of Carpentersville. The investigators are trained in the latest techniques of detection and investigation. They handle crimes ranging from minor property crimes to homicides. These officers are also responsible for investigating juvenile crime and intervention.
- Community Response Team — The Carpentersville police department created the specialized CRT unit in September of 2003. This unit was formed as a joint effort of all asset of the Carpentersville Police Department to resolve the concerns of our citizens that affect their quality of life. This unit is proactive in their mandate in order to problem solve in a holistic approach, rather than just using traditional methods of enforcement. The unit works closely with surrounding agencies to keep their efforts consistent with other jurisdictions and coordinate activities involving narcotics and gang activity. The CRT Unit also serves as the department's speaker's bureau if any organization or neighborhood group would like a presentation. The unit also sponsors department tours and children's programs throughout the summer.

- Special Task Force Investigators — Two investigators are assigned to specialized countywide task forces to better address serious criminal activity on a regional basis. One investigator is assigned to the North Central Narcotics Task Force under the direction and control of the Illinois State Police. This specialized unit works throughout Kane, McHenry, DeKalb and Kendall Counties to wipe out the spread of illicit drugs and the vast social problems they cause. A second investigator is assigned on a part-time basis to the Child Advocacy Center under the direction of the Kane County State's Attorney. This specialized unit is responsible for the investigation of all child sexual and serious physical abuse cases in Kane County. The unit consists of trained police investigators from several jurisdictions in Kane County, child welfare workers from the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services, and special assistant states attorneys. This joint effort was conceived to better facilitate and coordinate investigations and prosecutions of child sex offenders and take a holistic approach when considering the well being of the child-victim.
The Carpentersville Police Department is also a member of the Attorney General's Task Force for Internet Crimes and Child Exploitation and as such actively investigates on-line child exploitation cases.
ADMINISTRATIVE SERVICES
The Administrative Services Section of the department is responsible for assistance and support both internally and externally. The section includes physical plant operations, vehicle maintenance, department quartermaster, property and evidence, management information systems, and records section management. The section is currently shared by two Commanders and is staffed with the Administrative Assistant to the Chief of Police, six Records Technicians, and one Property Officer/Evidence Technician. The commanders are also responsible for grant administration, capital equipment procurement, budget preparation, and department liaison to Quadcom Central Dispatch. An executive secretary serves and reports directly to the chief of police.

Records Section — Six full-time are responsible for the filing, routing and keeping of all documents for the department. These documents include police reports, citations, department statistics, and court dispositions. Additional duties such as customer service, telephone switchboard, lockup observation and information management are also handled within the Records Section.

Property Section — The police department employs a full time civilian property control officer/evidence technician. This civilian officer is responsible for the cataloguing and documentation of all found property and evidence that comes to the police. The officer is also a trained evidence technician that assists the investigation section as a crime scene investigator.
- Planning — The Administrative Assistant to the Chief of Police serves as a staff officer reporting directly to the Chief. This position also is responsible for planning of future services and special projects as designated by the Chief.
