POLICE DEPARTMENT |

The mission of the Carpentersville Police Department is to provide the highest quality police services by working with our community, and sharing our mutual responsibilities for safety, service, and problem resolution.
2009/2010 ACCOMPLISHMENTS
- We had five main goals for 2009. The first was that we would vigorously combat gang and drug crimes along with public intimidation. This goal is unending. The police department believes that the deterrence and resolution of gang and drug related crime is a priority that cannot be left untended as long as illegal street gangs exist in the community. Sadly, illegal street gangs are firmly rooted in large metropolitan areas. The Police Department believes that our residents and businesses must feel safe in their neighborhoods and enjoy a high quality of life.
- While we recognize that many causation factors of illegal street gang activity are beyond law enforcement’s ability to cure, the members of the police department have resolved to prevent and act upon illegal gang and drug activity. In 2009, we increased our efforts to address these issues. For example, the Community Response Team made 254 drug related arrests, 34 gang related arrests, 63 arrests for other offenses, and seized 389 grams of cocaine and 1635 grams of cannabis. The patrol and investigations divisions made additional drug and gang related arrests and seizures.
- Another Carpentersville Police Department goal involved working to make our streets safer and to reduce the number of traffic crashes. To that end, with the assistance of the Village Board of Trustees, the police department created our first formally designated traffic enforcement function. The department now has one sworn officer dedicated solely to traffic safety enforcement. In 2009, traffic crashes decreased and overweight truck enforcement activity increased.
- A third goal was to enhance officer and department professionalism. The department took several steps including taking the leading role in the organization and operation of the 2009 Kane County Police Officer Memorial Service, held last May, to honor Kane County Police Officers that have perished in the Line of Duty. The service was sponsored by the Kane County Chiefs of Police Association and well attended. The police department was active in the Kane County Chiefs of Police Association with members that held executive board positions as Sergeant at Arms and Treasurer. In 2010, the department has representatives serving as association President and Treasurer. Other commitments that the department has made include servicing as chairman, co-commander, and investigators on the Kane County Major Crimes Task Force, The Kane County Technology Committee, The Kane County Arson Task Force, The Fox Valley Juvenile Officers Association, the Association of Police Social Workers, etc.
- Our fourth goal included addressing behaviors that negatively affect the community’s quality of life. To meet this goal the police department sought to address trouble spots wherever they might arise. For example, the police department sought closure of the north end of Oxford Road in an attempt to curtail crime in that neighborhood. The road has been closed for the past six months and seems to have had a positive impact on the neighborhood. We also concentrated on traffic and other complaints in various neighborhoods.
- Our last identified goal involved partnering with various community organizations to prevent and deter neighborhood problems. In order to meet this goal, the department established or enhanced relationships with Springhill Mall management and security, and Steadfast Companies (new owners of Fox View Apartments). We provided Crime Free Housing education to rental property owners, and made strong efforts to increase our neighborhood watch groups and enhance working relationships with home owner associations.
2010/2011 OBJECTIVES
As stated above, the police department established five main goals:
- We will partner with various community organizations to prevent and deter neighborhood problems while the police department continues to address behaviors that negatively affect the community’s quality of life.
- We will seek to address aspects of risk management for the police department that create accidents and related expenses that can reasonably be avoided through employee education and awareness.
- We will persist in vigorously combating all forms of illegal street gang and drug crimes.
- We will continue to strive to make area streets safer through education and enforcement of traffic laws.
- We will enhance officer and department professionalism.
Although these are very general goals, in 2009 we established over 50 measurable objectives that will help us attain our goals. These objectives are available for review upon request.
