FIRE STATION #2 RENOVATION PROJECT
This project is a major renovation of fire station #2, which is located at 305 Lake Marian Road. This station houses a fire engine, advanced life support ambulance, and the Battalion Chief. 60 % of calls for service are handled out of this station. The current 4,400 square feet will be renovated and a 2,200 square foot addition will be added. The groundbreaking was held on Tuesday, July 7th and Trustees as well as Village staff were present. Former Fire Chief Richard Paul also was in attendance .
The project is scheduled to be completed by May 2010 with a budget of $2,200,000.
Station #2 was constructed in 1959 and was designed to house equipment. Not firefighters 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Over the past few years, a structural crack has developed in the west wall due to the building settling from fuel tanks that were removed in the early 1990’s.

Work Began the week of July 13, 2009. The parking lot was removed and curbing around the property was removed. The curbing to the west side next to the VFW was rebuilt.
July 20, 2009-August 7, 2009. Excavation of the rear of the lot was started in preparation of the footings and foundation walls being dug and poured.
August 10-August 14, 2009. Backfilling and foundation waterproofing occurred. Forms were stripped and underground plumbing was installed.
August 17-August 28, 2009. Due to delay in brick and the proximity to the hill to the rear, no work could be completed until brick was delivered as block and brick were to be installed at the same time. This caused a two week delay in the construction. Brick was delivered on August 28, 2009.
August 31-September 18, 2009. Brick and block were installed for new addition. Lintels were set.
September 18, 2009. Crews and equipment vacated the station and moved operations to fire station #1 located in “Old Town".
September 21, 2009. Demolition started in the existing portion of the station.
During the week of September 28, 2009 demolition was completed and work began raising the openings of the overheads so all three doors ar the same height. Steel roof deck has been installed on the new addition and roofing has begun. The slab flooring of this area has been prepped for the concrete pour. work has also begun on the roof of the current station. Patching and bricking of existing openings has also started.
The week of October 5, 2009 was slowed by rain. In the photo to the right, door openings were set in the new addition and the photo on the left shows the apparatus floor area which has been removed to allow for new plumbing and repair of the floor.
The following week (October 12, 2009) was again affected by rain halting all outside work. Work focused on the second floor storage area and the HVAC system. The photo to the left shows the new stairway which leads from the apparatus floor to the second floor storage area. The previous stairwell was off the kitchen and the second floor was used for a day room for the firefighters. In the remodeled station, the second floor will be for storage only. The photo to the right shows the second floor with all the dividing walls removed and the new HVAC ductwork.

The week of October 19, 2009 saw a reduction in the rain but the overall project is about three weeks behind schedule due to the weather. This week, the work concentrated on the roof. The photo on the left shows the roof of the new addition as well as the recently installed new HVAC units. The photo on the right is showing the roof on the existing station. Many areas are in need of patching even before the new roofed is applied. The wooden frame shown in at the edge of the photo is in preparation for the new insulation which was in the ceiling of the old station but will be above the ceiling and below the roof deck.

October 26th was another nice week for the most part with little rain. Exterior openings were demolished and prepared for windows which are scheduled to be installed the week of November 8th. The far east bay door was bricked up half way in preparation of the new large window which will allow fresh air and light into the new fitness area. During the week, all roof repairs such as the photo to the right were completed and materials delivered for the installation of the new roof on the existing building which is scheduled to start late this week or early next week.

Week of November 2, 2009 saw a lot accomplished. The new addition started seeing plumbing and electrical work as well as masonry walls beginning to shape what the inside is going to look like. The roof on the existing building was removed as well as the drywall ceiling in the bay area. This revealed a 10 & 14 area of the roof decking that was rotted and needed replacement. This was not known until it was uncovered and created additional work and cost to the project.
This is one of several items that have been discovered during the project that was not anticipated, as with any remodeling project. The photo to the left shows the area where the piers were placed in the ground to address the sinking of the northwest corner of the building. This sinking resulted in a crack through the brick and block from roof deck to foundation. The crack also extended across the floor in the apparatus storage area. It was thought that the 14 piers were going to be driven 14 feet into the ground and find suitable ground to support the weight of the building. These piers had to go to a depth of 35 feet in order to address the stabilization of the building according to structural engineering specifications.
